STA-MCA bypass stands for Superficial Temporal Artery to Middle Cerebral Artery Bypass. It is a surgical procedure used to improve blood flow to the brain by creating a connection between two arteries: the superficial temporal artery (STA), located outside the skull, and the middle cerebral artery (MCA), located inside the skull.
This procedure is done to treat certain conditions that cause reduced blood flow to the brain, such as:
- Cerebral ischemia: When the brain does not get enough oxygen due to blocked or narrowed arteries.
- Moyamoya disease: A rare condition where arteries in the brain progressively narrow and form small, fragile blood vessels.

Connecting the Arteries
- The STA is gently attached to the MCA using tiny sutures under a microscope to create a new pathway for blood flow.
Closure
- The incision is closed, and the new connection allows blood to bypass the blocked area and reach the brain more effectively.
